Kennebunkport, ME

What a beautiful day we had. Took the motorcycle and explored Wells and Kennebunkport. Wells is nice but Kennebunkiport is breathtaking. What a lovely place and the money that is invested here is as breathtaking as the sights. We saw former President Bush’s summerhome (can’t get too close with all the security!) and I did want to take my walk at the beach today. Unfortunately, so did EVERYBODY. It was impossible to find parking or a spot at the beach . I was reminded of the Baltik See during summertime and had to settle for a swim in our pool.

We had lunch at the little harbor in Kennebunkport and I have to say that I need to eat something else but lobster after my last lunch here. Good thing we’ll be leaving for New Hampshire tomorrow. But … if you ever come into this area, you must see Kennebunkport; beautiful, beautiful!

Wir hatten einen herrlichen Tag mit wunderschoenem Wetter. Nahmen das Motorrad und fuhren in Wells und Kennebunkport herum. Wells ist sehr nett, doch Kennebunkport ist wie aus einem Bilderbuch. Die Haeuser und Umgebung sind gepflegt und einfach einmalig schoen. Wir sahen das Sommerhaus vom frueheren President Bush (konnten natuerlich nicht zu Nahe heran) und ich waere auch gern irgendwo am Strand spazieren gegangen, vor allem da gerade Abbe war und man haette Wattlaufen koennen. Doch leider hatte jeder diese Idee, so dass es unmoeglich war einen Parkplatz zu finden. Es erinnerte mich alles ein wenig an die Ostsee.

Zu Mittag assen wir in einem kleinen Restaurant am Hafen von Kennebunkport und nach diesem Lobsterbroetchen muss ich wirklich mit Lobster Schluss machen. Zum Glueck geht es morgen weiter nach New Hampshire. Doch falls Ihr mal in diese Gegend kommen sollten muesst Ihr unbedingt Kennebunkport besuchen.

Hier haetten wir Wattlaufen koennen! Konnten leider keinen Parkplatz finden.

The way to go to the beach here is by trolley! Hier sollte man wirklich die Strassenbahn (Bus) nehmen, da die Parkplaetze karg sind.

Portsmouth NH

Took a trip to Portsmouth, NH, where Donnie spent much time while President Bush was in Office. I tell you what, I could live here! The town is beautiful and I truly enjoyed the old buildings and the European flair. Donnie always enjoyed his stays here and I am glad he took me to see this city.
Loved the old architecture, the feeling of the place and the food ..... of course!
We were lucky with the weather too, not as sunny as yesterday but dry and warm. We'll be walking to a restaurant for dinner tonight. In the meantime I had a swim in the pool and did laundry while Donnie walked Otto and made more friends. Not a bad life!

Wir besuchten Portsmouth, NH, wo Donnie viel Zeit verbrachte waehrend der Periode von President Bush. Ich koennte hier leben!!!! Die Stadt ist sehr schoen und irgendwie Europaeisch; erinnerte mich an Lichtenfels und Berlin, eine Mischung von Deutschen Gegenden. Ich bin froh, dass Don mir diese Gegend zeigen wollte und das Essen war natuerlich auch wieder gut.
Das Wetter war wunderschoen heute, nicht zu heiss und gerade richtig um herumzulaufen. Bin wieder im Schwimmbad gewesen, habe Waesche gewaschen und Don hat Otto herumspaziert. Ein netter Tag fuer uns alle!

Motorcycle trip to Kittery, Me. Auf dem Motorrad zu Kittery, Maine.

Well, I told Donnie to go right on the main road to go to Kennebunkport but it should have been left. We turned up in Kittery which is a huge outlet center for numerous stores. I wasn't impressed with the prices but we had beautiful weather and we enjoyed the trip on the motorcycle. Also, we found a yarn store that was run by an Irish woman (oh yes!) and I couldn't resist buying more yarn.
Going back to the RV we stopped at Wells Beach again. The water was cold but lovely! Needless to say that I had to visit the pool as soon as we returned and Donnie took Otto for a long walk. There is nothing like a beautiful blue sky and harmony at home!

Wir wollten nach Kennebunkport, sind aber in die falsche Richtung gefahren und sind in Kittery gelandet. Man sollte halt nicht immer auf seine Frau hoeren! Kittery hat viele Einkaufsmoeglichkeiten, aber die Preise in Florida sind besser. Haben dennoch unsere Fahrt auf dem Motorrad genossen, da das Wetter einmalig dafuer war. Auf dem Rueckweg fanden wir einen Laden, der fast nur Italienische Wolle verkaufte und das von einer Irischen Dame (oh ja, auch sie hat nie ihren Dialekt verloren!) und ich habe natuerlich mehr Wolle einkaufen muessen.
Danach sind wir wieder am Strand vorbeigefahren und ich konnte meine Fuesse im Ozean kuehlen. Es war herrlich. Am Campingplatz bin ich sofort ins Schwimmbad waehrenddem Don mit Otto spazieren ging und mehr Freunde machte. Ach, es ist so schoen einen blauen Himmel zu haben und wir hoffen, dass das Wetter weiterhin so bleibt.

Wells Beach, Maine

We arrived in Wells yesterday and once again had an awesome meal for lunch; seafood quiche for me and a fish sandwich for Donnie. This is turning into a gourmet tour and I have far too much to show for it. After lunch we drove to Wells Beach but it started raining again and wouldn't allow for a nice walk along the water. Wells Beach is one of the few sandy beaches of Maine. Usually it's all crushed shells and pebbles, but here they do show sand (kind of brown, but sand!) with only very large rocks sticking out of the ocean.

Our camping site is like a resort with a heated pool I hope to use today. Other than that I would recommend Moody Beach which was, unfortunately, fully booked long in advance. Our site doesn't provide special places for dogs and is not as scenic as I hoped it to be.

We will be staying here for four days and have a bunch of area trips planned. Donnie has been here before with President Bush (the Bush family owns a "castle" right on the water) and wants to show me some sights. It's not the best place for Otto, but the next stop will be for him.
Looking at our agenda we noticed that we made a mistake with our reservations. We have three unaccounted days with no reservation after Wells. Did a little research last night and we decided to make a stop in New Hampshire at a very tranquil site that has special dog runs and even a beach on a lake for dogs only. We'll call this morning and hope to spend three days there just for Otto and to do absolutely nothing!

By the way, the sun is shining this morning!

Wir kamen gestern in Wells an und fuhren gleich zum Strand. Wells Beach hat einen der wenigen Sandstraende in Maine und wir hofften auf einen Spaziergang am Wasser entlang. Es hatte tatsaechlich Sand, wenn auch braun mit riesigen Steinen, die aus dem Wasser schauten. Leider fing es an zu regnen, so dass aus unseren Plaenen nichts wurde. Also haben wir wieder gegessen! Diese Tour wird zu einer Gourmettour. Ich bestellte Seafood Quiche und Donnie hatte ein Fischbroetchen. Schmeckte wieder sehr gut, doch mein Koerper ist mehr als ungluecklich ueber all die Koestlichkeiten.

Unser Campingplatz bietet ein geheiztes Schwimmbad, was ich hoffentlich heute benutzen kann. Don war frueher haeufiger in dieser Gegend (President Bush besitzt ein "Schloss" direkt am Wasser) und will mit mir ein paar Ausfluege machen. Fuer Otto ist es nicht der beste Platz, doch nach Wells wird er wieder mehr Auslauf bekommen. Wir wollten eigentlich zu Moody Beach, doch dort waren alle Plaetze schon lange im voraus ausgebucht.

Gestern fiel uns auf, dass wir nach Wells drei Tage haben, fuer die wir keine Buchung besitzen. Kein Problem! Wir rufen heute an einem Campingplatz in New Hampshire an, der im Gruenen liegt und viel fuer Hunde bietet. Sie haben eingezaeunte Plaetze, wo Otto ohne Leine herumlaufen koennte und sie haben sogar einen Strand an einem See, der nur fuer Hunde gedacht ist. Drei Tage ohne irgendwelche Plaene waere gut fuer Otto und uns.

Acadia National Forest

This morning we took a three hour tour through the Acadia National Forest. What a beautiful place even though we missed out on many magnificent views due to heavy fog. But we learned much of the local history and environmental issues.

I wouldn't mind returning to this place and some other sites in Maine which we will not hit this time around.

By the way, we had lobster roll for lunch, did laundry in the afternoon and had a little fire in the pit at our RV. Tomorrow we'll be leaving for Wells, Maine. The weather might not change much, but we do enjoy ourselves and all the people we meet because of Otto. He is such a social guy!

 

 

Heute morgen unternahmen wir eine dreistuendige Tour durch den Acadia National Park. Es war wunderschoen, auch wenn wir viele Aussichten verpassen mussten wegen des starken Nebels. Aber wir lernten viel von der hiesigen Geschichte und haben den Ausflug genossen.

Zu Mittag assen wir Lobster (was sonst?), dann wurde Waesche gewaschen und wir haben wieder mehr Leute kennengelernt durch Otto.

Morgen geht es weiter nach Wells, Maine. Das Wetter wird sich nicht viel aendern, aber so lange es durch den Tag durch trocken ist sind wir zufrieden.

Bar Harbor, Maine

Took a ride into Bar Harbor for breakfast and some walking. It's a beautiful place even though we are fighting rain and fog right now. Will go back this afternoon, hopefully on the motorcycle, and tomorrow we'll take a tour into the Arcadia National Forest. People here aren't as friendly as in the south which might have to do with the weather. It's hard to stay positive if you have a summer that could be missed by sleeping too long in the mornings.

We checked out the "sandy" beach with Otto, who once again loved the attention by everybody and he also liked the water. He is such a good boy!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Heute morgen waren wir im Staedtchen Bar Harbor fuer Fruehstueck und fuer einen Spaziergang. Bar Harbor ist wirklich schoen, auch wenn sich momentan Regen mit Nebel abwechseln. Die Sicht ist beschrenkt, doch wir hoffen auf einen Ausflug auf unserem Motorrad heute Nachmittag. Die Leute hier sind nicht so freundlich wie im Sueden was fast verstaendlich ist. Wenn man zu lange schlaeft vermisst man den Sommer hier, oder so sieht es wenigstens aus.

Ein Bild ist von was man hier als "sandigen" Strand bezeichnet. Otto hatte viel Spass und wird wieder sehr verwoehnt von Besuchern und Kindern. Jeder will ihn streicheln.
